Technical Data Overview

A breakdown of the emission factors used for the City of Tallahassee.

The Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Developing a greenhouse gas inventory (carbon footprint) involves calculating the volume of various greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced through an activity. These different gases are then converted into a single measurement: the **Metric Ton of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e)**.

How is it Calculated?

This calculator identifies your annual energy consumption—including electricity, natural gas, and vehicle fuel—and multiplies those figures by specific "emission factors" that determine the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere per unit of energy used.

What is a Metric Ton?

A metric ton (tonne) of CO2 equals 2,204 lbs. This is roughly the weight of a Volkswagen Beetle. A tonne of CO2 is produced by burning 114 gallons of gasoline or a round-trip flight from Atlanta to Rome. An average American house produces about 1 tonne of CO2 per month.
